  • Overview

    Ehsanul joined Chambers in October 2020, after the successful completion of his pupillage in Chambers.

    Prior to pupillage, Ehsanul worked in East Africa for an international charity providing pro bono legal assistance to prisoners. He helped set up a law clinic inside a maximum-security prison and led a strategic litigation team identifying and conducting cases for the reform of penal laws in Uganda. As part of his role, he worked on appeal cases for defendants who were at risk of the death penalty. During his time in Uganda, he was permitted to appear before the High Court for mitigation in serious cases, including Murder and Rape. He also assisted with submissions of appeal to the Supreme Court.

    Ehsanul also worked in Rwanda as a consultant advising on Criminal Justice Reform Project. He was advising on comparative criminal law practices drawing on experience from different jurisdictions. Before coming to the Bar, Ehsanul also worked as an associate lecturer at UWE Bristol, teaching Public and Constitutional law.

    Ehsanul regularly mentors’ students from the University of West of England and is a mentor at a charity called Migrant Leaders, whose aim is to develop and inspire young migrants across the UK.

  • Crime

    Ehsanul has a busy criminal practice involving both prosecution and defence work. He has been instructed in cases involving drug, violence and firearms offences. He also has experience of dealing with sexual offences. He is also regularly instructed for Fraud Act offences.

    Ehsanul also regularly is instructed by local authorities, police constabulary and law firms on applications and appeals to the Crown Court and private prosecution cases. Ehsanul also has experience in successfully dealing with firearm appeals.

    Various police constabularies regularly instruct him to deal with civil/ quasi-criminal applications for sexual harm prevention orders, stalking protection orders and disclosure applications to family courts.

    He is a CPS Grade 3 Prosecutor.

    Some of his recent cases include:

    R v DS: led junior for defence in a 3-week rape trial. The defendant faced 6 counts of rape against 3 separate victims spanning over 8 years. The case involved a large volume of material, complex disclosure issues and arguments on section 41 applications.

    R v RG: represented a defendant in a section 20 trial where the defendant was alleged to have assaulted his mother on two occasions, causing her grievous bodily harm. The jury acquitted the defendant after 30 minutes of deliberation at the conclusion of the 3-day trial.

    R v EV: prosecuted a case of an attempt to engage in sexual communication with a child. The case was part of an undercover police operation and required the handling of sensitive material. The defendant was convicted.

    R v AM: represented a defendant in a drugs conspiracy case involving 7 defendants. Successfully persuaded the Court that his client played a limited role and received a sentence of time served, having spent 10 months in custody already.

    R v PD: prosecuted a defendant convicted of a section 20 offence in the Crown Court after she brutally attacked an 89-year-old woman who she was caring for.

    R v FJ: prosecution of a woman who assaulted a 12-year-old child. The case received coverage in a number of national newspapers, including the Guardian.

    R v WZWZ: prosecuted a multi-hander affray involving 4 defendants. The defendants were convicted.

    R v DM: prosecuted in a case of fraud of £1.3 million by a pharmacy employee.  The defendant pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 5 years and 8 months. The case received coverage in various national media, including the BBC.

    R v M: represented a defendant who was charged with multiple offences, including controlling and coercive behaviour and threat to kill. Following representation from Ehsanul, the Crown accepted a plea to a less serious offence, which led to the defendant avoiding a prison sentence.

    R v AB & KD: prosecuted a case of multi-hander street robbery where two defendants attacked the victim leaving him with serious and long-term injuries. Both defendants pleaded guilty. One of the defendants was found to be dangerous and received an extended sentence.

    R v C & A: instructed to prosecute a multi-hander burglary trial in Crown Court. Both defendants were convicted.

    R v AC: successfully prosecuted a defendant for 2 offences of possession of a bladed article. The defendant was convicted following a 4-day trial in Bristol Crown Court.

    R v BT: prosecuted and secured conviction after trial in Crown court for multiple offences of assault against emergency worker.

  • Public law and Inquests

    Ehsanul has a particular interest in the intersection between criminal and public law.

    He has recently worked as part of a group working on the Training of Judiciary in Ukraine on International Criminal Law following the Russian invasion leading to international criminal and humanitarian law violations.

    His previous experience of working in multiple countries serves him well in this area. He has recently advised an international charity that promotes sustainable green banking. He accepts instructions on pro bono cases with public and human rights elements and has worked on cases through Public International Lawyer’s Network (PILNET) on a pro bono basis.

    Ehsanul also has a growing inquests law practice. He has represented public authorities in inquests.

    He has recently written on the scope of the Article 2 Inquests.
