Defendant prosecuted by Sarah Regan branded as vile rapist and jailed for 18 years

John-Lee Osborne used fake social media profiles in a deception which led to his conviction for a campaign of rape. Having set up false Instagram, WhatsApp accounts and telephone numbers using an online application, John-Lee Osborne deployed them to contact and threaten his victim in what the judge described as a means of controlling her body and her mind. HHJ Horton said that this case represented a disturbing development in the use of social media, with the internet in his hands becoming a weapon which he used to enable him to create a sex toy that he could control. Sentencing Osborne to 18 years in custody with a five-year extended sentence, HHJ Horton told him ‘you controlled her mentally. You controlled her body and her mind. This is worse than violence.’
