Practice:
Anna Midgley specialises in criminal law. She undertakes defence and prosecution work (CPS Grade 2 prosecutor) across a broad spectrum of offences, including regulatory crime and inquests.
She has experience of cases involving allegations of sexual offences (and has defended serious allegations in the Youth Court) and other violent crime.
She is often led in substantial cases concerning allegations of serious violence, drugs conspiracies and gun crime. As a result of that experience she has particular expertise in the issues of public interest immunity and disclosure which arise in relation to police informants who are subsequently charged with offences. She is recognised for her thorough preparation and rigorous legal analysis, and has a precise and effective style of advocacy.
Having practised in family law Anna has a depth of understanding of the principles of disclosure regarding Social Service files and family proceedings, and the relationship between confiscation and divorce proceedings.
Recent Cases of Interest:
R v Waithe and Others (2009) – junior for the Crown in conspiracy to Supply Class A drugs and possession of firearms with intent to endanger life, and possession of stun grenades. First case in Avon and Somerset of a defendant being signed up to give evidence for the Crown pursuant to SOCPA. Significant experience of the evidential, procedural and policy decisions involved;
Walker v Walker v CPS (2009) – case concerning interrelation of confiscation order under PoCA 2003 and a spouse’s claim under MCA 1973. Represented the applicant wife successfully in the High Court, securing an order that she retain the home in precedence over an order for sale to meet the confiscation order;
R v Suttie (2009) – representing defendant charged with perverting the course of justice in relation to a s18 stabbing, and perjury;
R v Townsend (2009) – representing defendant in multi-handed Class A and B drugs conspiracies;
R v Wilson (2009) – junior for the defence in conspiracy to Supply Class A drugs;
R v Pearce and Others (2007/8) – junior for the Crown in two conspiracies to Supply Class A Drugs involving commercial production and dealing from custody.
